THE PRINCES POET – A WONDERFUL WIN AND FITTING TRIBUTE TO HENRY PONSONBY
The Princes Poet (pictured stretching to get his head in front of rival Vape) put in a gutsy performance getting up to win by a short-head at Kempton on Tuesday evening 18th October in the last race on the card, the 6 furlong Sprint Series Qualifier.
He got a good break out the stalls and took advantage of Vape, who finished second, veering left at the start and hampering half the field. Vape got himself back in to the lead, but Charlie Bishop and The Princes Poet were always in a good position and got up in the final strides for a well deserved victory.
This was a poignant win for all concerned, in a week when HP Racing remembers its founder Henry Ponsonby and he would have been delighted to have his colours represented with another winner on the board. Eve Johnson Houghton, who has been Henry’s principal Flat trainer over the last few years, must be congratulated for keeping this horse in great condition and having faith in letting him take his chance on the All-Weather surface.
